Grant Overview

Hackathon for Caregiver Solutions in Idaho

Idaho has significant capacity gaps affecting family caregivers, primarily driven by the state’s rural landscape and a burgeoning population of older adults. Nearly 18% of Idaho's population is over the age of 65, translating to an increasing demand for caregiving services. However, with more than 80% of Idaho’s land classified as rural, accessing essential support and resources becomes challenging. This geographic dynamic contributes to a shortage of care facilities and professional caregivers, putting immense strain on family members who often take on caregiving roles.

The individuals most impacted by these capacity issues are family caregivers who often operate without adequate support. Many caregivers in Idaho face a dual challenge: managing their caregiving responsibilities while also working jobs to support their families. This dual burden can lead to stress and burnout, affecting not only their well-being but also the quality of care provided. As these responsibilities increase, many caregivers find themselves overwhelmed, prompting the need for innovative solutions tailored to Idaho’s needs.

This funding initiative will host a caregiver-centric hackathon in Idaho, inviting tech innovators, healthcare provider representatives, and family caregivers themselves to collaborate and create practical tools that address these ongoing challenges. The hackathon aims to foster creativity and encourage the development of solutions that can facilitate better communication, increase convenience in care coordination, and improve access to support services. Ideas generated during the hackathon will be aimed directly at alleviating the burdens faced by caregivers and improving the overall caregiving experience.

Implementing these tech solutions can yield significant benefits for Idaho’s caregiving landscape. By developing tools that are specifically suited to the needs of rural caregivers, this initiative aims not only to ease their burdens but also to strengthen the community networks that are often necessary for successful caregiving. The unique challenges that Idaho caregivers face due to distance and resource shortages necessitate innovative approaches that can directly enhance support for vulnerable populations.
