Grant Overview

Operations for Supporting Refugee Entrepreneurs

Idaho's increasing population of refugees poses both opportunities and challenges, with nearly 2% of the state's population being foreign-born. In the capital city, Boise, the refugee community has grown significantly, making up a vital part of the workforce but encountering barriers that hinder their entrepreneurial efforts. Many refugees arrive facing systemic challenges, including language barriers, unfamiliarity with local market dynamics, and access to financial resources, which ultimately restricts their ability to succeed as entrepreneurs.

The primary groups facing these barriers are individuals who have recently resettled in Idaho from conflict zones. This includes a significant number of individuals from East Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, who bring diverse skills and experiences but often lack the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate the local business environment. The challenges of establishing a business in a new cultural and economic landscape can be overwhelming, leading to underemployment and economic insecurity among this population.

Funding from this program is aimed specifically at providing these refugee entrepreneurs with tailored business training and resources. By addressing their unique challenges through targeted workshops and mentoring, the initiative will facilitate pathways to entrepreneurship that are inclusive and responsive to the needs of the refugee community. Partnerships with local chambers of commerce and nonprofit organizations will play a critical role in delivering this support efficiently and effectively.

To qualify for this grant, applicants must demonstrate an understanding of the operational realities in Idaho as they pertain to refugee businesses. This includes articulating how they plan to bridge the gap in language and cultural understanding, as well as outlining their capacity for sustainable business development. Applicants’ readiness to implement practices that encourage local economic integration will be crucial for consideration in this funding.

Unlike other states where refugee populations may be more established, Idaho’s support system is still evolving. Thus, specific attention to the barriers faced by new arrivals distinguishes this initiative and positions it as essential in fostering an inclusive economic climate within the state.
