Eligibility Rules for Idaho Retreat Grants
Only Idaho residents who have maintained a primary residence within state boundaries for the preceding 24 months may apply. The residency rule excludes recent arrivals and second-home owners whose property tax records show addresses outside Idaho. Applicants must also document that their primary artistic practice has occurred inside the state for at least 18 of the last 24 months.
Retreat awards cover up to 21 consecutive nights at approved facilities in the Sawtooth Valley or near Lake Coeur d’Alene. The program requires applicants to list exact dates, facility contracts, and a materials budget not exceeding $1,150. Artists must provide a one-page statement describing the project that will be advanced during the retreat and name one Idaho-based mentor or peer who can confirm the work’s progress.
Income verification uses the prior year’s Idaho state tax return. Applicants reporting adjusted gross income above $72,000 are ineligible unless they demonstrate documented loss of studio space or equipment in the preceding 12 months. The state’s 44 counties each receive a proportional allocation target, so reviewers track geographic distribution to avoid over-concentration in Ada and Kootenai counties.
The program differs from neighboring Montana grants because Idaho mandates proof of in-state tax filing and requires the retreat location to be at least 90 miles from the applicant’s primary residence. This rule prevents Boise or Spokane metro residents from using nearby out-of-state facilities. Successful applicants receive reimbursement only after submitting post-retreat photographs of the completed work and a brief usage report filed within 30 days of return.
