Parishes serving logging and ranching populations report that existing buildings were constructed before current defensible-space standards, leaving limited options for installing sprinkler systems or creating buffer zones without new construction.
Capital funding under this grant can address these gaps by supporting hardened facilities that double as community assembly points during fire events. Eligible religious orders and diocesan corporations may direct resources toward fire-resistant roofing, dedicated water cisterns, and reinforced outbuildings for equipment storage.
Idaho applications differ from those in Montana because the state mandates coordination with the Idaho Department of Lands on any project within wildland-urban interface boundaries. Applicants must also verify that proposed structures align with county wildfire mitigation plans updated after the 2020 season.
Economic reliance on timber, agriculture, and seasonal tourism creates variable workforce availability for construction crews familiar with fire code. The state's population density of 22 persons per square mile in many northern counties means projects must serve dispersed Catholic populations rather than concentrated urban parishes. Limited rail access in central Idaho further requires designs that accommodate delivery of specialized fire-resistant materials by truck over mountain passes.
