Idaho's Institutional Operations for Regional Sarcoma Collaboration
Idaho operates three primary research hospitals and two universities with wet-lab capacity, yet no single site maintains a sarcoma registry exceeding 400 cases. Operations funding therefore centers on establishing shared data-use agreements and standardized biospecimen protocols across Boise, Idaho Falls, and Pocatello. The state's geography places most residents more than 100 miles from the nearest NCI-designated center, requiring operational systems that move fresh tissue via commercial couriers within 24 hours.
The program supports joint principal-investigator structures between Boise State University's Biomolecular Research Center and St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute. Each application must list a hospital-based pathologist as co-investigator responsible for on-site slide review before shipment. Budgets may request up to $85,000 annually for a 0.5 FTE research coordinator who will manage material transfer agreements and maintain a REDCap instance hosted on state servers.
Eligibility requires evidence of an existing memorandum of understanding with at least two of the following: Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Kootenai Health, or the University of Idaho's Center for Health and Aging. Proposals must also submit a timeline showing how the first 50 cases will be accrued within 18 months, including contingency plans for winter road closures on Interstate 84. Unlike neighboring states with denser academic networks, Idaho reviewers prioritize projects that demonstrate operational redundancy for equipment failure at smaller facilities.
Reporting obligations include monthly counts of specimens processed and quarterly audits of data completeness. Funds may not be used for capital equipment purchases exceeding $25,000, directing resources instead toward personnel and standardized operating procedures that can be replicated at new sites.
